Acarbose: How It Works

In this video, Dr. Banshi Saboo, who is a diabetologist, introduced acarbose as an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that came into the market 25 years ago. Acarbose can decrease the absorption or delay the absorption of carbohydrates to reduce the peak of glucose level after a meal, which is proven to be effective for diabetic patients with a high intake of carbohydrates. The mechanism of acarbose is independent of pancreatic beta cell function, and it can be used in combination with other antidiabetic medications as well.
